Advice & Tips

Find Your Perfect Steak Knife

Do you like to cook with good ingredients such as a luxury piece of meat from the butcher? Then it's a shame that when cutting it with blunt knives it gets pulled apart . That is why lovers of good food also have a set of steak knives.

Steak knives vs normal table knives

Put a steak knife and a normal table knife side by side and the first thing you notice is the sharp tip of the steak knife. But besides the shape, there are more differences. For example, a steak knife is made of harder steel, which means they can be sharpened sharper and will stay cutting longer. In addition, because of the ergonomic handle, these knives are often more comfortable to hold. And not unimportantly, they look luxurious.

table vs steak

Looking for the best steak knife

Once you start looking for a steak knife you quickly come across serrated and smooth steak knives. Ideally, you want a steak knife with a smooth blade (cutting part), which cuts nicer slices with a better structure where no moisture and flavor is lost.

Untoothed Steak Knives

A smooth blade does blunt faster than a serrated blade. Therefore, they must be made of harder steel that stays sharp longer. This in turn makes the knife more expensive. A steak knife with a smooth blade can easily be sharpened with a sharpening steel.

Serrated steak knives

To keep the price affordable, some knife makers choose softer steel. However, these quickly become blunt. Therefore, they are sharpened with a serration. The serration keeps the knife feeling sharp longer. The downside, however, is that a serrated blade tears the meat more than a smooth knife. Also, they are not easy to sharpen yourself. Nevertheless, we also recommend serrated steak knives because they are sharper than normal table knives and therefore cut through meat effortlessly.

Laguiole steak knives

When thinking of a steak knife, the famous Laguiole steak knife is probably the first thing that comes to mind, with its wooden handle and distinctive bee on the top. These are also the most popular models in our store. Unfortunately, the design was never registered, allowing anyone to make a Laguiole knife. Because of this, there are many brands that release a similar knife but skimp on the quality of the steel and you notice this while cutting.

Well it is not that only in France are good Laguiole knives made. All the knives you find in our store have been tested and approved by us. Of course knives made of better steel are also more expensive but that does not mean that you have to spend hundreds of euros right away.

A small summary of the brands

Laguiole Style de Vie: Made in China from good quality steel. The finish is neat and the knives come out of the box reasonably sharp. Their series are divided as follows: the Premium Line, made of cheaper steel and thus serrated, and the Luxury Line, made of high-quality steel with a smooth blade.

Laguiole Jean Dubost: Made in France from good quality steel. It is the most affordable version of the original Laguiole design in France. Out of the package, they are fairly sharp.

Laguiole en Aubrac: Is made in France from high quality steel. It stays sharp much longer and the knives are also more beautifully finished than the other Laguiole brands. Each knife is made entirely by an artisan.

Laguiole Claude Dozorme: Also made in France from high quality steel. They are almost as beautiful as Laguiole and Aubrac knives but just a little less refined.

Japanese steak knives

Are you a true gourmet? Then we also offer Japanese steak knives. Like the chef's knives, these knives are made of special Japanese steel. They cut more delicately and are also sharper. A must for your Wagyu steak.

Not only do they cut better, they also tend to look much nicer. For example, they are perfectly finished and some models have multiple damask patterns on the blade. Works of art that take a set table to the highest level.

Steak forks and spoons

With several brands, it is also possible to get spoons and forks in the same design as the steak knives. This makes it a more complete whole and adds the finishing touches to your set table.

Can you sharpen steak knives?

You can sharpen steak knives without serrations yourself with a sharpening steel. Do you have luxury Japanese models? Then sharpen them only with a ceramic or diamond sharpening steel; of course, a whetstone will do just as well. Would you rather have it sharpened professionally? Then you can hand in your knives in our store at Kinkerstraat in Amsterdam, or send them in. It doesn't matter if your knives are serrated, Japanese or smooth; we sharpen them for you!

Frequently asked questions

What are good steak knives?

All steak knives in our store are approved by us. We prefer models without serrations. So if you are looking for an affordable set, we recommend at least the Laguiole Style de Vie Luxury line. The cheapest steak knives we offer are from the Laguiole Style de Vie Premium line. These do have a serrated blade.

Are there also steak knives with a round tip?

These are not common, but we do have some good models from Victorinox. These are affordable and razor sharp. See Victorinox tableware for this.

How do you store steak knives?

Steak knives can simply be kept in the kitchen drawer, but it is best to buy a set that comes in a case. That way they stay sharp and are safely stored. It becomes quite an experience when you have visitors and they get to pick their own knife from the box.

What should you look for when buying a steak knife?

Quality: Buy from original brands, there are many cheap copies that are made of poor material. They may look good, but get blunt quickly.

Serrated or smooth blade: Does a set of steak knives cost less than $50? Then make sure they are serrated. In this price range, the steel is too soft to stay sharp for long without serrations. Above that, always choose a set without serrations.

Warranty: Make sure there is a good warranty. Steak knives should last a lifetime with normal use, but of course there can always be a lesser model in between.

Official dealer: Following on from the warranty, make sure you buy them from an official dealer. This way you avoid buying a cheap counterfeit from China or Pakistan.

With us you will find a strictly controlled collection of steak knives. We judge the knives on quality, finish, sharpness and that within different budgets. So with us you will not find all steak knives, but guaranteed good models.

Steak knives as gifts

Did you know that steak knives are often given as gifts? They are popular as wedding gifts, with the names of bride and groom engraved on the knife or wooden box. But also as an original gift for Father's Day. All steak knives can be engraved for free with us at the time of purchase. We do this on the spot, so you don't have to come back a day later for it. This way you have an original and personal gift the same day.
