The difference between models
The main difference between the series is the fuel. You have a choice between gas, wood pellets or charcoal/wood. Simply put, gas is the easiest and cleanest. Choose wood/charcoal if you want the most authentic smoke flavor.
Wood vs Pellets vs Gas
- Can be done with wood or charcoal
- Gives smokiest flavor
- Smoke flavor customizable with different woods
- Lots of smoke from chimney
- Door must be closed to maintain temperature
- Harder to keep at temp (refill every 5/10 minutes)
- longer before ready (but faster than pellets)
- easier to use than wood
- Gives a slightly smoky flavor
- thanks to the feed grate you do not have to refill as often as wood
- door must be on to maintain temperature
- Lots of smoke from chimney
- easiest to use
- easy to clean
- No problems with smoke
- No door in the way
- Slightly more expensive to use than charcoal
- Least smoky flavor
- Gas cylinders are more difficult to obtain than charcoal
Tips for use
- Rotate the pizza every 30 seconds (horizontally)
- Check with a wireless thermometer that the stone is at temperature
- Keep the doors of the pallet and wood version closed as much as possible
- Does the pallet version have fire coming out the back? Open the air outlet more.
- Is the stone at temperature? Then lower the heat to give the ingredients more time to cook
- Pizza lifted with your scoop? Then shake it a few times before you put it in the oven, this will make the dough stick less.
- Don't put too many ingredients on the pizza, this makes it heavier and harder to move around
- Semolina works better against pizza sticking than regular flour
Frequently Asked Questions
Is an Ooni durable?
The pizza ovens are made of high-quality materials that all last for years. As such, Ooni provides a 3-year warranty on all of their ovens. The ovens are made for home use though. For professional use, you get a 1-year warranty.
Is an Ooni pizza oven easy to use?
Yes, although there is a difference in the models. Want to go for the most convenience? Then choose the gas version.
Can I convert my Ooni to gas?
This is possible with the model. You can buy an extension for this that converts the oven to gas. That can also be quickly converted back to the charcoal version. So you can choose whether to go for quick or ultimate taste that day.
What gas connection do you need?
There are two variants of gas-powered pizza ovens made, one of 30 mbar for the Netherlands and one 37 mbar for the Belgian market. The difference is in the number of Bar the oven can handle.
Is an Ooni easy to clean?
Yes, they are fairly easy to clean. The gas version has no residue from wood/pellets and is therefore the simplest. For the other models, we recommend the cleaning brush so you can properly clean the stone from ash. Thereby, old burned wood/pellets should also be cleaned up.
Food leftovers can be charred by leaving the oven on for a while after preparing the pizza. After this, you can easily wipe them away.
Are the Ooni ovens portable?
They are dismountable, making them easier to carry. The small models fit in a bag, but it's always a nice weight to carry. A trip to a park, boat or along on a camping trip is doable, but you don't want to take a long walk with it.
Can you also bake other things?
Yes, in fact they are not just pizza ovens. You can also cook bread, vegetables and meat with it. All at high temperature so it gets a nice crust. For meat and vegetables, you do need a pan made of stainless steel or cast iron.
